Great Room Combines Living, Dining, and Kitchen

I have been involved with the Aloha Camps as a camper, counselor, and a trustee for over fifty years. In the late 1990s I began looking for a vacation property on Lake Morey or Lake Fairlee. In 2002 I found this wooded site on a cove just down the road from Hive. It had two seventy year old cabins right on the lake, and lots of potential. We summered in these cabins in 2003 and 2004, and added electricity, running water, and a tent platform.
Behind these cabins was a rocky ledge, where we might situate a house so that it overlooked the lake without crowding the cabins. We started talking about what we might want in our "dream" house on the lake. We wanted to retain the rustic feeling of the cabins which we loved -- and we wanted all the modern amenities. We wanted enough space to entertain our whole family. We wanted a kitchen big enough to 'live' in. And we wanted to feel the presence of the lake at all times.

Screened Porch Overlooks Lake

Here you can see the two historic cabins by the lake, with the house behind

There were two huge ancient white pines that would have to come down where the house would go. We agonized over this until we discovered that we could fell them and have them milled nearby and make use of virtually all of their wood. Now our floors include boards two feet wide from these trees. Besides providing all of the floors, their wood covers the ceilings, the entire garage, and virtually all of the beams throughout. We had fun imagineering our perfect home. We used locally sourced and 'green' building materials as much as possible. The walls and roof are extra thick and heavily insulated.
The house was built over two seasons, and we moved in in October of 2005. We were well pleased with the fruits of our planning. We have an open design that suits our casual lifestyle. We included a large screened porch for summer living, and radiant heat to stay cozy in the winter. The two cabins and a tent allow us to entertain family all summer, while still retaining some 'space' for ourselves.
Now we are ready to move on to our next adventure, and will be sad to let Idle Pine go. It is a unique and special place, which no words nor even photos can adequately explain. You have to see for yourself.
